Preschool Two- Valentine's Heart Craft and Skill Building

Today in our Preschool Two classroom, our children worked on a special Valentine’s heart craft — and while it may look like a simple art project, it was packed with meaningful learning opportunities!

During this activity, students strengthened their fine motor skills by carefully gluing, placing, pressing, and decorating their hearts. Using their fingers to peel stickers, squeeze glue bottles, and position small craft materials helps build the small muscle control they need for future writing, cutting, and everyday independence tasks.

We also focused heavily on independence skills. Each child was encouraged to follow directions step-by-step, make creative choices, and complete their project with minimal assistance. It was wonderful to see them take ownership of their work — asking for help when needed, problem-solving independently, and showing pride in their finished creations.

Engagement was strong across the classroom. Some students carefully planned where each piece would go, while others explored colors and textures more freely. No matter their approach, every child was actively involved, building confidence and persistence as they worked.

Beyond the physical skills, this activity also supported:

  • Listening and following multi-step directions

  • Patience and turn-taking

  • Creativity and self-expression

  • Social interaction as children complimented each other’s work

We love when learning feels fun, and today was a perfect example of how purposeful play builds lifelong skills. Be sure to take a moment to ask your child about their heart craft and what part they enjoyed most!

Sensory & STEM Spotlight: Volcano Exploration with Miss Jennifer

Earlier this week, our Pre-K scholars took part in an exciting sensory-rich STEM activity led by our Enrichment teacher, Miss Jennifer — a hands-on Volcano Science Project!

The children explored how different ingredients interact to create a volcanic eruption. Using simple materials, they followed step-by-step directions to build their volcano and then observed what happened when the ingredients were combined. This activity encouraged our students to:

  • ๐Ÿง  Make hypotheses about what they thought would happen before the eruption

  • ๐Ÿงช Test their predictions by mixing the ingredients

  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Observe cause and effect as the volcano erupted

  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ️ Describe and reflect on what they saw using new science vocabulary

This project supported early STEM skills by helping students practice:

  • Following multi-step directions

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving

  • Asking questions and exploring outcomes

  • Learning that it’s okay if results don’t turn out exactly as expected — that’s part of science!

Not only was this a fun and messy sensory experience, but it also sparked curiosity and excitement for learning through discovery.

Sweet Creations & Sensory Exploration

Over the holiday break, our children stayed busy learning through play while strengthening important developmental skills!

We would also like to give a special thank-you to Ms. Lindsey, our Health and Wellness Coordinator, who helped guide and complete this activity with the children. Her support ensured the experience was not only fun and engaging, but also focused on healthy habits, safety, and mindful choices.

We focused on fine motor development by encouraging small hand movements such as scooping, sprinkling, pressing, and assembling—activities that help build hand strength, coordination, and control needed for writing and everyday tasks.

At the same time, we explored our five senses through a fun and interactive cooking experience. Children had the opportunity to see, smell, touch, and taste different ingredients while listening to directions and sharing their observations.

One of the highlights was creating our very own S’mores Pie! This activity encouraged creativity and leadership, as children made independent choices about what ingredients they wanted to include. They practiced decision-making, took turns, followed steps, and proudly led their own creations from start to finish.

Through experiences like these, children not only learn important developmental skills—but also build confidence, independence, and joy in learning. We love seeing their personalities shine through their choices!
