Earlier this week, our Pre-K scholars took part in an exciting sensory-rich STEM activity led by our Enrichment teacher, Miss Jennifer — a hands-on Volcano Science Project!
The children explored how different ingredients interact to create a volcanic eruption. Using simple materials, they followed step-by-step directions to build their volcano and then observed what happened when the ingredients were combined. This activity encouraged our students to:
Make hypotheses about what they thought would happen before the eruption
Test their predictions by mixing the ingredients
Observe cause and effect as the volcano erupted
Describe and reflect on what they saw using new science vocabulary
This project supported early STEM skills by helping students practice:
Following multi-step directions
Critical thinking and problem-solving
Asking questions and exploring outcomes
Learning that it’s okay if results don’t turn out exactly as expected — that’s part of science!
Not only was this a fun and messy sensory experience, but it also sparked curiosity and excitement for learning through discovery.
