Sensory & STEM Spotlight: Volcano Exploration with Miss Jennifer

Earlier this week, our Pre-K scholars took part in an exciting sensory-rich STEM activity led by our Enrichment teacher, Miss Jennifer — a hands-on Volcano Science Project!

The children explored how different ingredients interact to create a volcanic eruption. Using simple materials, they followed step-by-step directions to build their volcano and then observed what happened when the ingredients were combined. This activity encouraged our students to:

  • ๐Ÿง  Make hypotheses about what they thought would happen before the eruption

  • ๐Ÿงช Test their predictions by mixing the ingredients

  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Observe cause and effect as the volcano erupted

  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ️ Describe and reflect on what they saw using new science vocabulary

This project supported early STEM skills by helping students practice:

  • Following multi-step directions

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving

  • Asking questions and exploring outcomes

  • Learning that it’s okay if results don’t turn out exactly as expected — that’s part of science!

Not only was this a fun and messy sensory experience, but it also sparked curiosity and excitement for learning through discovery.
